What is RAIN · a field note

Everything that matters is a copy somebody else holds.

Your deed. Your medical file. The vote you cast. The evidence in a case. Each one lives on a machine you have never seen, and is only as safe as the people allowed to change it.

What we do today

Three ways to keep the truth safe. Three fires waiting to happen.

Most records that matter live inside a familiar bargain: hand one keeper the copy, and trust them to keep it safe. The bargain can hold for years. Then a person makes a quiet edit, a company turns off a server, or an office discovers its backup was never tested.

We don't need surveillance. We need something that can't be quietly changed.

The idea

Nobody holds the copy. Everybody holds a piece. The pieces check each other.

That's RAIN. A file is locked, broken into pieces, and the pieces are spread across a village of small, ordinary computers in ordinary homes and offices. No one machine has the whole file. No one machine can read its piece. And there are more pieces than you need, so losing a few loses nothing. Together, they can always bring the original back.

Why it holds

Why it can't be quietly changed or lost.

Where the rain is needed

Trust is on fire wherever a fact has to stay available, unchanged, and provable long after the people and machines around it are gone.

  2. ElectionsA record of the count that every party holds a piece of.
  3. Public recordsDeeds, licenses, minutes, budgets, that survive the office that made them.
  4. ContractsOne agreement every party can prove, not competing copies controlled by one side.
  5. EvidenceA chain of custody that is checked by machines, not sworn to by people.
  6. AIThe source material and the decisions people need to examine when a machine makes a claim.

And the data centers?

We are told the future needs more of them.

Bigger buildings, more power, more of the world's information in fewer hands. Data centers already use more than three percent of the world's electricity — a larger carbon footprint than every plane in the sky. And what they give us in return is a bigger copy for someone else to hold.

RAIN points the other way: many ordinary devices, the size of a deck of cards, each caring for a small piece, checking one another, healing damage without a central keeper. Living systems survive this way. So did the original Internet.

We don't need giant data centers. We need more trust.
We don't need surveillance. We need truth.
