What Comes After the Clouds

A four-minute film with no dialogue, set in New Mexico. It follows the whole life of a fact — from a message carried on horseback, into the machines, up into the cloud that feeds on everything we leave there, and home again with the rain. The story first; the film itself is at the bottom of the page.

The story

Four movements, four minutes.

I · golden hour

A message, carried

It opens before wires. Buffalo on the plains, a runner in the distance, a rider at full gallop — when something needed to be known, a person carried it, and trust rode with them. Then the land speeds up: a steam train against the derricks, highways and antennas, the flash of the atomic age. Every era moves the message faster. Every era also moves it a little further from the hands it belongs to.

A rider at full gallop across golden plains. An atomic blast rising over the desert.

II · the machines

Into the machine

Blueprints under flat hands. Switchboard cables. A green terminal humming in the dark, then rooms of monitors with data streaming overhead — information becomes something institutions keep. And still, at a night market strung with lights, a woman holds her own story like a small flame in her palm. That is the film's picture of what data actually is. Not abstract. Hers.

At a night market, a woman holds a small glowing flame of light in her hand.A green CRT terminal glowing in a dark room.

III · dark

The cloud

Over the valley it rises — a luminous cloud with tendrils reaching down into every roof, drinking. The town dims under it. A hospital's EMERGENCY sign burns red in the night; in the records office, what the clerk keeps streams up and out of his screens; red lightning walks the valley floor, and the sky tears open along a burning seam. This is the storm we built for ourselves: everything, everyone's, gathered in one place nobody can see into.

A luminous blue cloud over the town, tendrils reaching down into the houses.A hospital emergency sign burning red in the dark.In a records office, red light streams up out of a clerk's computer.A burning seam of light tearing across a dark sky.

IV · gold

What comes after

Then gold. A phone lights up with a lattice of it. Streams of light pour through doorways and down the corridors of the clinic and the school, home to home, until the town is woven into one bright web and the cloud has nothing left to drink. It bursts — not defeated, starved. What falls afterward is only rain: kids in raincoats stomping puddles, streets shining, and over the wet town a golden moonbow and the film's last words — Your data. Back where it belongs.

A hand holding a phone glowing with a golden lattice.A stream of golden light flowing through the doorway of an adobe building.Children in raincoats splashing through golden puddles at night.A golden moonbow arcing over the rain-soaked town at night.
